Here are some questions that often get asked when it comes to building a brand:
- Do I really need to have a “brand”? Isn't a logo enough?
- Does it really matter that I use the exact same color and font on all of my digital & print assets?
- If an asset is not in my [brand guidelines] but looks nice, that’s all that's important right?
If those are some of the questions you have, then these 5 key steps on how to create a brand will help you get on the right path. Branding builds recognition and trust, and trust is the foundation of any good relationship between a business and the consumer.
1. DEFINE YOUR MISSION STATEMENT
Creating a mission statement is as easy as saying what you do, who you do it for, what the benefits of your services are. Whether you are a one-man or one-woman shop, you should have at least a brief statement that explains what you do and the value you have to offer. A concise statement of what you’re all about is all that a mission statement is!
2. DETERMINE YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE
Your brand should have a strong message portrayed that attracts your target audience. Your brand needs to be something that resonates with your audience, then it will lead to that awareness, recognition, trust, and revenue.
3. ESTABLISH YOUR BRAND'S VALUES, BENEFITS, AND QUALITIES
Don’t spend so much timing focusing on your competition, let’s focus on YOU! (there will be another time that is good to be focusing on your competition, but that’s not now) What does your brand have that no other brand has? Your brand!
You must ensure that your brand consists of the values, qualities, and benefits that make your business unique. Make a list that sets your business apart from others. Your list should consist of how your product/services improve the lives of your consumers and contribute to success.
4. CREATE YOUR VISUAL COMPONENTS
At this point, you should have your target audience, your mission, values, and qualities that make your business. Now, it’s time to move on to the more exciting side of branding (at least for us!) – the design part! Visual design are the components that make up your brand – such as, logo, color palette, typography (fonts), iconography, and other visual elements.
As you create these components, build a set of brand guidelines. This will ensure that whoever is using your brand, they are using it accurately and consistently.
5. PUT YOUR BRAND TO WORK!
Now that you have finished creating and designing your brand, it’s time to put it to work. Integrate your branding everywhere your brand touches customers. Your website, social media, advertising, packaging, etc. should all have the brand consistency from the previous four steps we talked about. Refer to your brand guidelines to ensure that all of your platforms reflect your brand in the best, most consistent and effective way.
